The powerful Moravian family of Žerotín, owners of this residence, constructed a Renaissance chateau on the site of an old 13th - century castle in the mid-1500´s and made it into the center of Moravian cultural and social life. Náměšť nad Oslavou also was a home to a community of the Czech Brothers, an indigenous Protestant denomination, who established a printing house there. After the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, the chateau changed hands several times, eventually coming into the possession of the Haugwitz family who kept it until the end of W.W. II. After 1945 a part of the chateau was converted into a summer residence of the president of Czechoslovakia.
A large collection of tapestries of the 16th to the 19th centuries is installed here.
